Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool have named the same midfield in their last three matches in all competitions with back-to-back 2-0 victories against Everton and Newcastle before followed by a 5-2 hammering at the hands of Real Madrid so changes are likely for this one.

Joe Gomez started the midweek game against Madrid but struggled quite badly and the former Charlton defender is now a doubt for this match due to injury. Given that Ibrahima Konate is not yet 100% ready to return, it is expected that former Cameroon international Joel Matip will partner Virgil van Dijk in the heart of Liverpool’s defence.

Both Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson should continue to play, albeit both players would appear to be in need of a rest but the lack of options keeps them in the side. Calvin Ramsay is injured and Kostas Tsimikas has not kicked on after a bright start to his career at Anfield.

Jordan Henderson and Fabinho were both heavily criticised for Tuesday night’s defeat but Stefan Bajcetic was also someone who struggled to get to grips with a higher level of football. Klopp could take the drastic decision of changing all three midfielders with Naby Keita, Harvey Elliott, Curtis Jones and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all available for selection. Even Fabio Carvalho has played in the middle three.

In attack, Klopp may be keen to persist with the current front three of Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez because they have shown real signs of progress and could be deemed ‘the future’ for the club in an attacking sense. Having said that, though, both Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino came off the bench in midweek and are in need of game time with a midweek Premier League match against Wolverhampton Wanderers coming up.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Keita, Fabinho, Bajcetic; Salah, Firmino, Jota

UNAVAILABLE: Ramsey (Injured), Diaz (Injured), Thiago (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Gomez (Injured), Konate (Injured), Arthur (Injured)
