THE LOWDOWN

WATFORD

  • Xisco Munoz’s Watford managed to gain promotion playing a fairly defensive and quite dour style of football last season that saw the Hornets keep 15 clean sheets in his 27 matches in charge.
  • The style was to simply use the undoubted attacking quality to ‘do something’ whilst keeping their opposition at arms’ length and nullifying their inferior opponents. The likes of Ismaila Sarr have been supplemented by the signings of Imran Louza and Emmanuel Dennis going forward but the plan remains to be the same. Keep games close and use the quality up-front to break a team down.

ASTON VILLA

  • Aston Villa have had one of the more eventful summers of all those in the Premier League this season. Coach John Terry departed in July whilst captain Jack Grealish has been the subject of the summer’s biggest money move to Manchester City. An impressive year last time around will mean a top-half finish and a push for Europe is the Villains’ target.
  • Villa are looking like they might switch formation this season from a 4-3-3 to a 4-4-2 after the signing of Danny Ings to play, presumably, alongside Ollie Watkins. That, combined with their two new wingers Emi Buendia and Leon Bailey, means that the second-city club are likely to be one of the most entertaining sides in the league this season.

THE PREDICTION

Aston Villa are being tipped up to do well using the money they received for Jack Grealish and are expected to benefit from spreading the quality around the side with a bit more depth in key positions. It cannot be argued that they are currently a weaker side than they were in May and they are now travelling to a Watford team that will have all of the nearly-promoted home crowd cliches behind them. It is a cliche because it can often be true. The hosts will fancy their chances of surprising Villa and a Watford win seems like a good bet as Villa look to gel without several key players.
