Antonio Conte remains on the path to recovery, following surgery on the removal of a gallbladder so Cristian Stellini remains in charge in the dugout for Spurs. With Stellini on the sidelines, Spurs have managed two wins from two but continue to have a depleted squad that is forcing them to get creative with how they field their wing-back system.
Last weekend, due to Ivan Perisic’s age and having to play in the UEFA Champions League, as well as Ryan Sessegnon’s injury, Ben Davies played at left wing-back and the Welshmen did the job well, keeping Jarrod Bowen largely quiet and getting forward to be effective in attack, providing the assist for Emerson Royal’s opening goal.
Both Emerson and Davies performed to a level where, especially against a stronger team where they will have be more stubborn in defence, they may well have locked down the wing-back spot, at least for this match.
Clement Lenglet did pick up an injury against West Ham but is expected to be available for this one and should play at left centre-back alongside Eric Dier and Cristian Romero. If Lenglet is unavailable then Davinson Sanchez could come in but Stellini and Conte may be tempted to revert to Davies in the back three with Perisic able to come in at wing-back.
Oliver Skipp was outstanding in midfield last weekend, alongside Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. Pape Matar Sarr had also been impressive in the UEFA Champions League against Milan but Skipp’s performance last weekend means the Englishman is likely to get the nod.
Son Heung-min was dropped for that victory but the South Korean, for the second time this season in the Premier League, came off the bench and scored. Richarlison may retain his place in the team ahead of Dejan Kulusevski but either of those players will be playing off their captain, in the absence of Hugo Lloris, Harry Kane.
