  • It is five defeats on the bounce now for bottom-of-the-table Nottingham Forest but, in a show of faith, the board handed manager Steve Cooper a new contract which certainly raised one or two eyebrows.
  • Part of Cooper’s problem though has been trying to gel so many new signings but he has the majority of his squad available here and has plenty of options at his disposal.

  • Aston Villa haven’t exactly been easy on the eye lately with Steven Gerrard’s mantra of making his teams ‘tough to beat’ certainly coming to the fore in recent fixtures, but a lack of bite in attack will be a concern to the manager.
  • Leon Bailey is doubtful for the trip to the East Midlands while there are problems at left-back with both Lucas Digne and Ludwig Augustinsson absent through injury.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Henderson; Williams, Cook, Mckenna, Lodi; Yates, Freuler, Mangala; Johnson, Awoniyi, Gibbs-White

UNAVAILABLE: Richards (Injured), Niakhate (Injured)

PREDICTED XI (4-3-1-2): Martinez; Cash, Konsa, Mings, Young; Ramsey, Douglas Luiz, McGinn; Buendia; Watkins, Ings

UNAVAILABLE: Steer (Injured), Carlos (Injured), Augustinsson (Injured), Digne (Injured), Kamara (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Cash (Fitness), Chambers (Fitness), Bailey (Injured)

Steve Cooper was, perhaps surprisingly, given a show of faith by the Nottingham Forest hierarchy when he was awarded a new contract despite recent poor performances, and he will be determined to repay that trust beginning with this Monday evening fixture against Aston Villa. The visitors are hardly setting the world alight right now, but they have been defensively resolute lately, and with Forest’s raft of new signings still yet to really gel as a unit, you can see the hosts being frustrated here. As has been the case in four of Villa’s last five games, a match containing under 2.5 goals looks likely.
