THE LOWDOWN

NEWCASTLE

  • Newcastle meekly surrendered away to Aston Villa in their second Premier League fixture of the new campaign, losing 2-0 at Villa Park and things didn’t get any better for them in midweek after getting knocked out of the Carabao Cup by fellow top flight side Burnley on penalties after a drab 0-0 draw in 90 minutes
  • Both goalkeepers Martin Dubravka and Karl Darlow remain out for this match, whilst midfielder Jonjo Shelvey will also miss out due to a calf injury, with Isaac Hayden and Paul Dummett both doubtful.

SOUTHAMPTON

  • Southampton acquired their first point of this season’s Premier League in impressive style last weekend by holding high flyers Man Utd to a 1-1 draw and backed that result up by thrashing League Two side Newport County 0-8 in their midweek Carabao Cup clash, a club record victory for the Saints away from home.
  • Both Will Smallbone and Sam McQueen remain unavailable for the trip to St. James Park, whilst midfielder Stuart Armstrong is a doubt for the game due to a tight calf.

THE PREDICTION

The mood inside Newcastle’s camp is likely to be extremely low having not only lost their opening two Premier League games this season, but also having been dumped out of the Carabao Cup. Supporters are turning on manager Steve Bruce and an unpleasant home atmosphere is expected at St. James Park, which could play right into Southampton’s hands. Ralph Hasenshuttl’s side gave a good account of themselves against Man Utd and in contrast, their dressing room should be full of confidence heading into this one. The Saints will no doubt be fired up, with striker Adam Armstrong in particular having a point to prove against his old club and if Hasenhuttl’s men can replicate their performance levels shown last Sunday, then they are more than capable of picking up at least a point in this one, so back the visitors double chance.

Tip: DOUBLE CHANCE – SOUTHAMPTON OR DRAW
