THE LOWDOWN

MAN UTD

  • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was rewarded for his guiding Manchester United to second in the table and a Europa League final with a new three-year contract. That decision, albeit puzzling and needless, does highlight a faith that Solskjaer is taking the Red Devils in the right direction - at least that is the view of those above him at Old Trafford.
  • The signings of Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane have proven a desire for Manchester United to reclaim their proud reputation of being one of, if not the, biggest clubs in the world.

LEEDS UTD

  • Leeds United and Marcelo Bielsa are worth the air time they are given. A lot of criticism gets levelled at the Argentine simply because he and his side receive a lot of coverage but there is a reason they do. He has implemented a sophisticated and complex style of play upon a group of mid-table Championship players and now has them looking like they will establish themselves in the top-half of the Premier League.
  • Bielsa will admit that improvements can be made and he sought to solve and evolve his side’s style of play in the second-half of the season with a bit more defensive discipline and less man-to-man playing styles.

THE PREDICTION

Manchester United are unlikely to start either Jadon Sancho or Raphael Varane in this one with both having not having enough, much or any time to train ahead of the opening day. Leeds will also be without their new signing Junior Firpo following a slight knock in pre-season so this encounter is going to look a lot like last season’s teams. A 6-2 win for United at Old Trafford and goalless draw at Elland Road were the results but the former is the more likely pattern of the game given the fast and aggressive starts that Leeds java got off to under Bielsa. A 3-1 win against Stoke, 3-1 win against Bristol City and 4-3 defeat at Liverpool have been their opening days under El Loco and, given that United will be happy to play on the counter-attack, another high-scoring match is in store here.
