THE LOWDOWN

MAN CITY

  • Four straight wins in all competitions see Man City head into this encounter on a high with three of those victories coming at the Etihad Stadium, the latest an entertaining 6-3 triumph over RB Leipzig in the Champions League.
  • Manager Pep Guardiola has a number of injury issues from a defensive perspective, with centre-backs John Stones and Aymeric Laporte both confirmed to be out, therefore Nathan Ake should keep his place in the team especially after his goal against RB Leipzig midweek.

SOUTHAMPTON

  • Southampton are winless so far in this season’s Premier League, although their last three top flight games have all ended in draws, with the Saints most recently holding high-flying West Ham to a 0-0 stalemate at St Mary’s.
  • Following his recovery from COVID-19, striker Shane Long will be subject to a late fitness test ahead of this game, while Theo Walcott and Stuart Armstrong are expected to miss out but Will Smallbone is close to a return to action.

SOUTHAMPTON

PREDICTED XI (4-1-4-1): McCarthy; Livramento, Stephens, Salisu, Walker-Peters; Romeu; Redmond, Ward-Prowse, Elyounoussi, Djenepo; A. Armstrong

UNAVAILABLE: S. Armstrong (Injured), Walcott (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Man City are certainly enjoying the benefits of playing at home this season, particularly from a goal scoring perspective. Not only have Guardiola’s side won each of their three matches played in all competitions at the Etihad Stadium this season, they have also racked up a staggering 16 goals across those three fixtures, scoring a minimum of five goals per game. This certainly doesn’t bode well for Southampton, who themselves have conceded 13 goals over the course of their last three visits to Man City in the Premier League. When taking into account the attacking firepower and sheer depth in quality that the hosts have within their ranks going forward, it’s difficult to see any outcome other than a Man City win by at least two clear goals in this one.
