THE LOWDOWN

MAN CITY

  • Manchester City fought back from being 2-0 down away at West Ham United last weekend to share a 2-2 draw. That result has set up a grand-stand finish against Aston Villa in the final round of fixtures. City will have to win because Liverpool will be expected to do their side of the job at home to Wolves.
  • City do still have a bit of a centre-back crisis and Fernandinho’s limitations were laid bare last weekend when Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio caused the Brazilian lots of issues in behind.

ASTON VILLA

  • Steven Gerrard will be looking forward to his first full pre-season with Aston Villa, as well as the potential to mould and cultivate his own squad. The Villains shared a 1-1 draw at home to relegation-threatened Burnley in midweek and they have lost just one of their last six matches - that one defeat coming at home to Liverpool.
  • It has been suggested that Gerrard rested his fellow former Liverpool players Philippe Coutinho and Danny Ings against Burnley with this match in mind. Coutinho will seemingly come back into the eleven but it is still unknown as to whether Ings will return.

THE TEAM NEWS

MAN CITY

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Ederson; Cancelo, Fernandinho, Laporte, Zinchenko; De Bruyne, Rodri, Silva; Mahrez, Jesus, Grealish

UNAVAILABLE: Dias (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Walker (Injured), Stones (Injured)

ASTON VILLA

PREDICTED XI (4-1-2-1-2): Martinez; Cash, Chambers, Mings, Digne; Luiz; McGinn, Ramsey; Coutinho; Ings, Watkins

UNAVAILABLE: Hause (Injured), Konsa (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Bailey (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

It is very easy to get caught up in the ‘narrative’: Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard taking two former Liverpool players, Philippe Coutinho and Danny Ings, to the Etihad to get a result that potentially gives Liverpool the title ahead of Manchester City. At the same time, the former Aston Villa captain and £100 million man Jack Grealish ends his first City season trophyless, even including the Community Shield. However, that would be daft to be drawn into when trying to give a real prediction. City do have issues at the back and Villa scoring is not unlikely, given that, but the hosts have a plethora of options going forward and will still be expected to win this one quite comfortably.
