THE LOWDOWN

LUTON

Luton Town are one of the in-form teams in the Premier League. The Hatters have been genuinely competitive throughout the campaign and now, even having played a game fewer than most of the teams around them, they begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting outside of the bottom three and the relegation places.

Rob Edwards’ side come into this one on the back of scoring four goals in successive matches, firstly hammering Brighton and Hove Albion by four goals to nil at Kenilworth Road and then sharing a thrilling 4-4 draw with Newcastle United at St James’ Park. That means they are now unbeaten in all six matches that they have played across all competitions in the calendar year of 2024.

SHEFFIELD UTD

The appointment of Chris Wilder immediately brought about some improved performances in early-to-mid-December but The Blades have since been hugely underwhelming ever since then and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Wilder replaced again by Sheffield United before the end of the season with relegation an inevitability.

Since hammering Gillingham by four goals to nil in the third round of the FA Cup to kick off their New Year, Sheffield United have conceded 15 goals in four matches across all competitions. They were 4-0 down by half-time at Bramall Lane last weekend against Aston Villa before conceding a fifth in the second-half, making it successive matches of shipping five at home after a 5-2 loss to Brighton in the cup.

THE TEAM NEWS

LUTON

Rob Edwards has confirmed that defender Teden Mengi is a doubt for this weekend. Danish centre-back Mads Andersen is set to be unavailable, as well as new signing Daiki Hashioka.

The Hatters will remain without Zimbabwean international Marvelous Nakamba, who is still sidelined by injury, as well as club captain Tom Lockyer, following his cardiac arrest in December.

PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Kaminski; Burke, Osho, Bell; Kabore, Barkley, Mpanzu, Clark, Doughty; Adebayo, Morris

UNAVAILABLE: Lockyer (Illness), Andersen (Injured), Hashioka (Injured), Nakamba (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Mengi (Injured)

SHEFFIELD UTD

Chris Wilder confirmed that Ivo Grbic would be his number one goalkeeper at Bramall Lane, which led to Wes Foderingham having to depart, but he was forced off against Crystal Palace on debut and will continue to miss this one with a concussion.

The Blades will welcome back striker Rhian Brewster from his suspension but they are still without the likes of Chris Basham and John Egan due to injury. George Baldock and Daniel Jebbison are also still unavailable.

PREDICTED XI (4-1-4-1): Foderingham; Bogle, Ahmedhodzic, Robinson, Trusty; Souza; McAtee, Hamer, Ben Slimane, Brereton Diaz; McBurnie

UNAVAILABLE: Grbic (Injured), Egan (Injured), Basham (Injured), Baldock (Injured), Jebbison (Illness)

QUESTIONABLE: Lowe (Injured), McBurnie (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

At the start of this season, Luton Town were widely written off with the expectation that their remarkable underdog story would be undermined and punished in the top-flight. It started badly but The Hatters have really turned that around and are actually among the in-form teams in the division. They are facing a Sheffield United side, on the other hand, where it does appear the question that surrounds their relegation is when not if. Given their home advantage, Luton should be backed to complete a double over The Blades with a victory on Saturday.

TIP: LUTON TO WIN
