THE LOWDOWN

LEICESTER

  • Brendan Rodgers’ FA Cup champions backed up their trophy win at the end of last season by winning the Community Shield last week against Manchester City at Wembley. The impressive and frankly remarkable decade of Leicester City is missing a second Champions League qualification - that should be the expectation, though, this time around. Injuries have severely blighted the Foxes in recent seasons.
  • Depth is something, therefore, that needed to be added to their squad and the signings of Ryan Bertrand, Boubakary Soumare and Patson Daka do not just offer depth to the squad but serious talent on a level that would be associated with the ‘back up’ or ‘fringe’ players at more established ‘top four’ clubs.

WOLVES

  • A fairly flat end to Nuno Espirito Santo’s tenure at Wolverhampton Wanderers last season meant there needed to be some sort of shake up and revitalisation at Molineux to ensure that the Fosun project didn’t go stale. Relegation is essentially avoided with the mass of sheer talent available to Bruno Lage but a reconnection to a faster style of play in order to challenge the top six is needed.
  • The loss of Portugal’s number one Rui Patricio was quickly amended by the arrival of Portugal’s number two Jose Sa. Sa joins compatriot Francisco Trincao in an already well-known to be heavily influenced Portuguese contingent in the Wolves squad. Trincao’s arrival from Barcelona has promoted a lot of excitement in the Midlands and it must be said that it is a real coup as he looks to help Wolves shift away from Nuno’s wing-back system. They did try to evolve and adapt the style and structure last season under the former manager but it was unsuccessful.

THE PREDICTION

The appointment of Bruno Lage was to encourage Wolves to play an easier on the eye style of play that was higher up the pitch and progressed the ball quickly. That should mean they are far more entertaining to watch especially in a front foot 4-3-3 system. It is also a style of play that is likely to help Leicester’s pace in behind with Harvey Barnes and Jamie Vardy counter-attacking and receiving passes from Tielemans and Maddison. That means this game could and probably should be full of goals. Both teams to score appears the way to go for this opening day clash.
