THE LOWDOWN

EVERTON

  • It’s been a turbulent and pretty disappointing summer for Everton supporters. The news about Gylfi Sigurdsson being a certainly more worrying and sour note than the trivial matters of football but Evertonians will be frustrated and confused with their club’s dealings this summer - none more so than the appointment of former European cup winning Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez.
  • Andros Townsend and Demarai Gray have come in to offer width to an admittedly narrow group of players. Uncertainty had engulfed James Rodriguez’s time at the club but it looks like he is ready to start the season with Richarlison unavailable due to his participation at the Olympic games winning gold for Brazil.

SOUTHAMPTON

  • Similar to Everton, Ralph Hassenhuttl’s Southampton are also in a period of uncertainty and confusion as well as being slightly concerned about the upcoming campaign. The sale of Danny Ings out of nowhere to Aston Villa has been offset by the arrival of Adam Armsyrong from Blackburn Rovers.
  • Captain James Ward-Prowse continues to be linked with a move away from the club and he has missed the last couple of pre-season games due to a slight injury. The Saints had a fantastic first-half of the campaign but a second-half that was equally as extreme but in a bad way.

THE TEAM NEWS

EVERTON

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Coleman, Godfrey, Keane, Digne; Allan, Doucoure; Townsend, Gray, Iwobi; Calvert-Lewin

UNAVAILABLE: James Rodriguez (Isolating)

QUESTIONABLE: Kean (Isolating), Andre Gomes (Isolating)

SOUTHAMPTON

PREDICTED XI (4-2-2-2): Forster; Walker-Peters, Bednarek, Salisu, Perraud; Diallo, Romeu; Ward-Prowse, Redmond; Adams, Tella

UNAVAILABLE: Smallbone (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: A. Armstrong (Fitness), Broja (Fitness)

THE PREDICTION

As ever with a Benitez side, it’ll be a cautious approach from Everton - especially with the doubts over Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The Toffees have several strong centre-back options so a three-at-the-back system, similar to how Benitez played at Newcastle, is likely to be deployed up against a counter-pressing 4-2-2-2 that Hassenhuttl favours. The Saints will look to target the sides of the middle centre-back, likely to be Yerry Mina, and Nathan Redmond could be vital for that. Other than that, a lack of creativity on the ball is likely to mean Southampton will suffer in the final third. A low-scoring draw, which both sides will probably be happy with, seems a likely outcome for this one.
