THE LOWDOWN

CRYSTAL PALACE

  • A well-disciplined and effective counter-attacking approach earned Palace their first point of the season on Monday as Patrick Vieira’s men managed to hold ten-man Liverpool to a 1-1 draw.
  • There is no change in the treatment room at Palace but Patrick Vieira is likely to adopt a more attacking approach for this encounter with one of Odsonne Edouard or Jean-Philippe Mateta occupying the central striker role, while Michael Olise will be pushing for inclusion after his bench appearance last week.

ASTON VILLA

  • Steven Gerrard got one over on former England teammate Frank Lampard as he guided his Villa side to a deserved 2-1 victory over Everton, in what was a much more accomplished display than their opening weekend defeat to promoted side Bournemouth.
  • Diego Carlos will face an extended period on the sidelines after undergoing Achilles tendon surgery so Calum Changers or fit-again Kortney Hause will start in central defence, while Emi Buendia – who came off the bench to good effect last week – is pushing for a start in the number ten role in place of Philippe Coutinho.

THE PREDICTION

Villa and Palace delivered much-improved displays last week to kick-start their respective seasons, with the former seeing off Everton and the latter holding Liverpool to a well-deserved draw. Both managers will be urging their men to kick on here then, which could lead to an entertaining encounter. Neither side have kept a clean sheet so far this season, but there’s no denying the attacking talent at both ends of the pitch so this match is certainly a prime candidate for the both teams to score market.

TIP: BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
