THE LOWDOWN

CRYSTAL PALACE

  • Crystal Palace are aiming to start the season strongly at home, carrying over their excellent form from last season at Selhurst Park which saw them keep seven consecutive home clean sheets.
  • Midfielder Cheick Doucoure is likely to make his debut for the Eagles due to an injury to James McArthur, whilst Jean-Philippe Mateta and Odsonne Edouard will each be hoping to start as Patrick Viera’s main striker.

ARSENAL

  • After narrowly missing out on the top four behind North London rivals Tottenham, Arsenal have already conducted some eye-opening transfer business and will want to get off to a far better start than they did last season, which saw them beaten by another London club in Brentford on the opening night of the campaign.
  • New signing Gabriel Jesus is expected to lead the line upfront, although the Gunners could be without attacking midfielder Emile Smith-Rowe, left-back Kieran Tierney and right-back Takehiro Tomiyasu.

THE PREDICTION

Arsenal may have enjoyed an excellent pre-season campaign, but now the real business begins and in Crystal Palace they face a side who have lost just one of their last eight games against the Gunners. The Eagles are likely to utilise their searing pace on the counter-attack here, which may stifle Arsenal somewhat as they will be unable to push too many bodies forward knowing the threat their opponents pose if given space to run into. However, it’s also important to note the hosts’ excellent defensive record at Selhurst Park under Patrick Viera and Arsenal’s exciting young offensive players will not find it easy breaking the Eagles. With that in mind, it would be no surprise to see goals in short supply on this opening night and backing under 2.5 goals to be scored has to be favoured.

TIP: UNDER 2.5 GOALS
