THE LOWDOWN

CHELSEA

  • Marcos Alonso’s equaliser on Thursday night gave Chelsea a 1-1 draw at home to Leicester City. Given their significantly superior goal difference on Tottenham Hotspur, that result has all but secured Chelsea’s third place finish in the Premier League table - a one-place improvement on last season.
  • The off-field shenanigans remain as a cloud over the club with Chelsea’s ‘special operating licence’ now just over ten days away from expiring and their takeover is yet to have gone through.

WATFORD

  • Watford’s relegation has been confirmed for a couple of weeks now and The Hornets have shown no signs of fight, improvement, organisation or capability. They were heavily beaten by five goals to one at home to Leicester City last weekend and this could be Roy Hodgson’s last game in management.
  • The visitors have already announced and welcomed their manager for next season, Rob Edwards, so players playing for contracts and a starting place remains something on the line but, if truth be told, this is a game to get out of the way for the Hertfordshire club.

THE PREDICTION

Chelsea have had a really frustrating second-half to the season across all competitions. Thomas Tuchel’s Blues have lost two cup finals to Liverpool on penalties and been knocked out of the UEFA Champions League after extra-time. They have won just three of their last nine matches in the Premier League. Watford, though, are one of the few teams that can blow that bad record out of the water. They have been atrocious at Vicarage Road but not much better on the road. The visitors are winless in their last eight matches and have been going through the motions for quite a few weeks. Chelsea should win this one quite comfortably.
