THE LOWDOWN

CHELSEA

  • Last weekend saw Chelsea fell to their first Premier League defeat of the season, losing 0-1 against reigning champions Man City, leaving them third-place in the Premier League, but level on points with four other sides, three of those below the Blues in the table on goal difference.
  • Head Thomas Tuchel will be without defender Reece James due to an injury sustained against Man City whilst defensive midfielder N’Golo Kante is currently isolating after testing positive for COVID-19.

SOUTHAMPTON

  • Southampton are currently going through a tricky spell in the Premier League at present having not scored a goal in any of their last three matches and are still without a victory after six games, although four of those have been draws.
  • The Saints have lost centre-back Jack Stephens for a significant period of time due to a knee injury and will also be without striker Armando Broja for this match as the youngster is unable to play against his parent club.

THE TEAM NEWS

CHELSEA

PREDICTED XI (3-4-2-1): Mendy; Chalobah, Thiago Silva, Rudiger; Azpilicueta, Jorginho, Kovacic, Chilwell; Havertz, Mount; Lukaku

UNAVAILABLE: James (Injured), Kante (Isolating)

QUESTIONABLE: Pulisic (Injured)

SOUTHAMPTON

PREDICTED XI (4-4-2): McCarthy; Livramento, Bednarek, Salisu, Walker-Peters; Elyounoussi, Romeu, Ward-Prowse, Djenepo; Adams, A. Armstrong

UNAVAILABLE: S. Armstrong (Injured), Broja (Ineligible), Stephens (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Smallbone (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

A quick turnaround is required here from a Chelsea perspective with just three days between this match and their trip to Juventus in the Champions League and Southampton will be hoping to capitalise. The energy of this Saints side will make life uncomfortable for a Chelsea side without N’Golo Kante and it would be no surprise if they were to cause a surprise by finding the net here at Stamford Bridge despite not scoring in their last three league games. However, in Romelu Lukaku, Chelsea boast a striker with an excellent record against Southampton, having scored nine goals over the course of his career against the Saints and the Belgian will likely play a crucial role in front of goal in this match. When taking into account the strength-in-depth of Thomas Tuchel’s squad and home advantage also being in their favour, then Chelsea should have enough in the tank to overcome Southampton.

Tip: CHELSEA TO WIN AND BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
