THE LOWDOWN

BURNLEY

  • At half-time on Thursday, Burnley led Aston Villa and had leapfrogged Everton, who were 2-0 down at home to Crystal Palace. 45 minutes later, Everton won and Burnley just about got away with a point. That means they head into the final day knowing that if Leeds win at Brentford, they must win.
  • Five minutes after being substituted on, Matthew Lowton was shown a straight red card for a fairly reckless tackle on Calum Chambers. Lowton’s ability to beef up the Burnley back-line, should they be leading on Sunday, means his absence could be costly should an appeal not be overturned.

NEWCASTLE

  • At every opportunity, Newcastle United’s ownership and the controversies surrounding it, should be mentioned. With that mention out of the way, The Magpies have been phenomenal in the second-half of the season and their 2-0 win at home to Arsenal last week has given them a real chance of an unlikely top-half finish.
  • Eddie Howe has been able to mould different players to different positions, with Joelinton in midfield being the best example, so injuries have not caused them too many issues. They welcomed Callum Wilson back to the starting eleven last week for the first time in 2022. Fabian Schar did go off with a head injury, though.

THE PREDICTION

Burnley’s fate is in their own hands. If The Clarets win, such is their superior goal difference, the Lancashire club will avoid Premier League relegation, once again. Mike Jackson’s interim appointment has led to an improvement in performances and results but they remain short on goals with just eight goals scored in their seven games since he took over from Sean Dyche. Newcastle, as mentioned, are going for an unlikely top-half finish. Eddie Howe and a lot of their support will be interested and focused on what could be a very intriguing summer of transfer activity. However, they will also be looking to go out with a bang this season. The visitors conceded five at Tottenham and five at Manchester City. They are the only games in which they have conceded more than a goal in a game in their last 20 matches in all competitions. Given that, as well as Burnley’s low-scoring tendencies, this might be a tense and nervy match.

Tip: UNDER 2.5 GOALS
