THE LOWDOWN

BURNLEY

  • The transfer window always appears to be a difficult experience for Burnley and, as ever, that has been the case again. The signings of Nathan Collins for around £12 million from Stoke City and Wayne Hennessey don’t necessarily immediately improve the starting XI of the Clarets but that is a starting XI that has kept Burnley in the Premier League for five successive seasons now.
  • Sean Dyche’s “stock” remains high but there will be concerns that this could be the year the Burnley bubble bursts. A 17th place finish last season without immediate improvements to that team means that a relegation battle appears to be the likely outcome for this upcoming campaign.

BRIGHTON

  • Dyche is coming up against another very highly rated English manager in Graham Potter. There was talk over the summer that Potter might be moving on from Brighton with Tottenham linked but he remains the manager of the Seagulls. The Seagulls that were almost a parody last season. Potter’s impressive coaching and ability to improve players is evident but it must be said that Brighton have to do objectively better this season rather than just qualitative analysis. Game after game of relentless chance creation and almost embarrassing wastefulness has slightly upped the stakes on the south coast side.
  • The loss of Ben White at the back means there could be a tweak in system for Potter from the 3-4-3 but even that is unknown given the flexibility of his implementation of systems and ability to adapt and evolve players to fit anywhere on the pitch. The impressive signing of Enock Mwepu has been their standout bit of business.

BRIGHTON

PREDICTED XI (3-4-1-2): Sanchez; Veltman, Dunk, Webster; Mwepu, Gross, Bissouma, March; Lallana, Trossard; Maupay

UNAVAILABLE: Welbeck (Injured), Burn (Injured), Lamptey (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Caicedo (Injured), Karbownik (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Both sides come into this with fairly major defensive headaches. Burnley have the option of playing their new signing Nathan Collins out-of-position at right-back on debut due to Bardsley’s injury and the loss of Nick Pope will also hurt The Clarets. Brighton, on the other hand, are yet to replace Ben White and are likely to be without Dan Burn as well as Tariq Lamptey who would both be set to start in their best XI. That could lead to an overcompensation in each sides’ strategy so a low-scoring game could be in prospect. A goalless draw and a 1-1 draw were the two results between these two last season and under 2.5 goals, once again, seems likely.
