THE LOWDOWN

BRENTFORD

  • Brentford will have been disappointed to have been fallen to a second successive Premier League loss last time out after losing to Man City in West London, however for Pep Guardiola’s side to have won by just a goal to nil is a testament to the Bees when considering how many goals City had been racking up in recent games.
  • Midfielder Matthias Norgaard was suspended for the visit of Man City and will surely return to the starting line-up for this clash with Aston Villa, replacing Frank Onyeka, whilst head coach Thomas Frank will be hoping for positive news regarding the availability of defender Kristoffer Ajer and attacker Bryan Mbeumo, the latter appearing more likely to be passed fit.

ASTON VILLA

  • Aston Villa were last in action on Boxing Day when they were beaten 1-3 by Chelsea before their most recent fixture against Leeds Utd was postponed due to a raft of injuries and Covid-19 cases amidst the Whites.
  • Steven Gerrard tested positive for Covid-19 over Christmas and as a result the Villa manager was not in the dugout against Chelsea on Boxing Day, however Gerrard could return to the touchline here, whilst he will be unable to call upon the services of centre-back Tyrone Mings with the Villa skipper suspended and therefore joining the injured Leon Bailey and Marvelous Nakamba on the sidelines.

THE PREDICTION

Aston Villa have benefitted from a longer recovery time between fixtures compared to opponents Brentford, who face a huge physical test here having competed against Man City only four days previous to this match. However, the Bees had successfully won their last two home league games before the visit of Man City and against a Villa side significantly weakened defensively by the absence of Mings, Brentford have every right to be confident that they claim at least a point in this one. Consider utilising the double chance market in backing the hosts to gain either a victory or a draw.

Tip: BRENTFORD TO WIN/DRAW DOUBLE CHANCE
