THE LOWDOWN

ASTON VILLA

  • Unai Emery began well in charge of Aston Villa before three successive defeats in February dented their charge. However, The Villains come into this on the back of a 2-0 victory away at Everton in their most recent outing, last weekend.
  • Defender Diego Carlos is making progress in his recovery from a long-term lay-off but is not yet ready to rejoin the squad, while a hamstring injury while sideline Philippe Countinho for a month.

CRYSTAL PALACE

  • Patrick Vieira’s Crystal Palace aren’t quite right in the mix in the relegation battle just yet but The Eagles are in bad form and struggling to collect points. The Croydon club’s goalless draw at home to Liverpool means they are winless in their last nine matches in all competitions.
  • Vieira has confirmed that Wilfried Zaha will be in the squad and, given their struggle for wins of late, the Ivorian could well find himself in the starting line-up here.

THE PREDICTION

Aston Villa begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting eleventh in the Premier League table, a place above Crystal Palace. A Palace win takes them just a point behind Villa. Despite that, though, the two sides are in very different moods and looking very different ways. Villa, for example, will see that the top seven and potential European qualification is just eight points away, whilst the faltering Palace are looking over their shoulders at the six-point gap between themselves and the bottom three and, given their form, they will be very concerned. Villa, especially with their home advantage, are firm favourites for this one.

TIP: ASTON VILLA TO WIN
