THE LOWDOWN

ARSENAL

  • Over the last decade and a half, it became quite lazy and predictable to talk of the softness at the heart of Arsenal. However, the last week or so has shown that, whilst many talk of improvement under Mikel Arteta, there are still some glaring major weaknesses. The Gunners had the top four in their hands but defeats to Newcastle and Tottenham mean their fate is no longer under their control.
  • Arsenal do have a small squad, which will have to be reinforced regardless this summer with European football of some kind next year, and some injuries have been key. Takehiro Tomiyasu has been one that has spent a chunk of time out this season and he was forced off against Newcastle with an injury. Full-back will be a concern for this weekend with Kieran Tierney also still out.

EVERTON

  • At 2-0 down at half-time at home to Crystal Palace, Everton were set for an extremely nervy final day. However, with Goodison Park right behind The Toffees, Frank Lampard’s Blues came from behind to win 3-2 and guarantee their Premier League status for next season.
  • Injuries and suspensions, as well as refereeing decisions, have been used to deflect and excuse some terrible performances and results but now, with one game to go, that can finally be put to bed. They remain without a few key players, especially in defence, although Jarrad Branthwaite does return from his suspension following a red card at home to Brentford last weekend.

THE TEAM NEWS

ARSENAL

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Ramsdale; Cedric, White, Gabriel, Tavares; Elneny, Xhaka; Saka, Odegaard, Martinelli; Nketiah

UNAVAILABLE: Partey (Injured), Tierney (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Tomiyasu (Injured)

EVERTON

PREDICTED XI (3-4-2-1): Pickford; Coleman, Keane, Holgate; Iwobi, Van de Beek, Doucoure, Mykolenko; Alli, Gordon; Calvert-Lewin

UNAVAILABLE: Patterson (Injured), Townsend (Injured) Rondon (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Mina (Injured), Delph (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

At about half-past eight on Thursday evening, this one was set up to be a thriller with both sides needing to win. After Everton’s remarkable turnaround and the celebrations that followed, this now seems to be a game just to get out of the way for the blue side of Merseyside, so they can focus on their summer planning and preparation. Arsenal are reliant on already relegated Norwich City defeating Tottenham Hotspur to stand any chance of finishing in the top four and qualifying for the UEFA Champions League. The Gunners will likely dominate a game against a now unmotivated Everton side and a fairly comfortable, albeit probably futile, Arsenal win looks the likely outcome for this one.

Tip: ARSENAL TO WIN
