THE LOWDOWN

ARSENAL

  • Last week, Mikel Arteta returned to his former club, Everton, with The Toffees under new management in Sean Dyche. The Gunners, threatening to run away with the Premier League title, failed to offer much in attack and eventually fell behind to a James Tarkowski header. It wasn’t a smash and grab win, though, as Arsenal deserved to lose.
  • Recent signings Jorginho and Leandro Trossard will be hoping for more minutes, while some under-par displays from Ben White may tempt Arteta to select Takehiro Tomiyasu at right-back.

BRENTFORD

  • According to many expected goals and expected points models, Brentford are actually underperforming with their current performance level actually a few points ahead of where they are currently at. That is surprising because The Bees’ 3-0 hammering of Southampton last weekend has kept them well in the hunt for European qualification anyway.
  • Given their recent good form, an unchanged line-up would be no surprise here, although the likes of Kristoffer Ajer will be hoping for a recall after being benched last time out.

THE PREDICTION

This London derby is between two sides that have both overperformed their pre-season expectations. Arsenal would have been planning for a top four finish but instead find themselves in pole position to reclaim the Premier League title for the first time in nearly 20 years. Brentford, on the other hand, have now defined ceiling or goal, such is the way they are so well run off the pitch. However, a top six finish would have likely been beyond their realistic expectation. The Bees offer a variety of attacking threat and, despite being dispatched by Arsenal earlier in the season, will be confident of hurting a Gunners defence that has kept just two Premier League clean sheets in the six games since the post-FIFA World Cup restart. Arsenal should still come out on top, though, especially with their home advantage.

TIP: ARSENAL TO WIN & BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
