Aston Villa are an opponent that will send shivers down Liverpool fans’ spine as the reminders of their 7-2 hammering at the hands of Dean Smith’s side at Villa Park last October come flooding back. That memory needs to be put to one side by the Liverpool players with three points crucial for the defending champions in their quest to finish in the top four. To get them however, the Reds must break their current losing streak at Anfield. Jurgen Klopp’s side have lost their last six Premier League matches on their own patch and with three points currently separating them from fourth-placed West Ham, they cannot afford another slip up here. Aston Villa come into this one having got back to winning ways last weekend at home to Fulham, their 3-1 triumph over the Cottagers a first victory in five Premier League games. They will make things very difficult for Liverpool as Dean Smith’s men look to sit back, soak up pressure before hitting the Reds ruthlessly on the counter attack as they did at Villa Park. Liverpool may also show signs of fatigue physically having been involving in a gruelling 3-1 defeat vs Real Madrid in midweek, whilst Villa have enjoyed two days of extra rest. Whilst they will head into this match as underdogs, the visitors double chance may well prove the smart play.
