THE TEAM NEWS
OXFORD
- Oxford won a dramatic League One play-off semi-final tie against Portsmouth on penalties to book their place at Wembley and they are now just one game away from returning to the second-tier for the first time since 1999.
- Both of the two legs against Pompey finished 1-1 and as the two teams could not be separated in extra-time the tie went to penalties where Oxford keeper Simon Eastwood was the eventual hero with his save from Cameron McGeehan’s spot-kick.
- Top scorer Matty Taylor was only deemed fit enough for the bench last Monday against Portsmouth, though he did play a part as a sub and is expected to start this match.
WYCOMBE
- Wycombe claimed a 6-3 aggregate victory against Fleetwood Town to progress through to the final and they are now on the verge of appearing in the second-tier for the first time in their history.
- Having established a 4-1 lead against Fleetwood in the first leg they were always in control of the tie in the second leg and a 2-2 draw ensured their progression.
- Gareth Ainsworth has no significant injury problems to contend with and is not expected to spring any major surprises with his team selection.
THE PREDICTION
It is stating the obvious to mention what a huge game this is for both clubs with a place in the Championship up for grabs and although it is very disappointing that no fans will be at Wembley we should still be treated to an intriguing contest. Oxford were certainly in better form prior to the enforced break and although they had to rely on penalties to come through against Portsmouth the fact that they successfully negotiated the challenge has only served to increase their belief. Wycombe had a much more comfortable passage through to the final with a convincing aggregate win against Fleetwood but it has to be remembered that Fleetwood played a large part of the first leg with ten men. Oxford came out on top with a 1-0 win when these teams met earlier in the season - they also have a good recent record in this fixture with four wins from their last five meetings - and the U’s are tipped to claim a narrow victory over Wycombe on this occasion too.
