THE TEAM NEWS
PERU
- Peru ended their group campaign with a win over Venezuela and they will come into this quarter-final clash with Paraguay with the feeling that they have nothing to lose having avoided defeat in three consecutive matches.
- A goal from Andre Carrillo just after the break was enough to separate the two teams as the Peruvians were able to make an immediate return to winning ways following their draw with Ecuador.
- In a further boost for Peru, they look set to be able to call upon Alexander Callens who was forced from their field in the first half against Venezuela but it was only a minor knock and he should be available for this last eight clash.
PARAGUAY
- Paraguay suffered disappointment in their final group game of Copa America as they went down to Uruguay, meaning they come into this quarter-final tie on the back of two wins and two losses in the competition so far.
- The Paraguayans defended well, only conceding from the spot in the 21st minute, but they were unable to find a breakthrough in front of goal and now their attacking options will be impacted for this contest.
- Miguel Almiron played a key role in his side’s 2-0 win over Chile in their previous contest but he was forced off with a thigh injury and he will not feature in this game as a result, although the seriousness of the issue is yet to be determined.
THE PREDICTION
These two teams look well-matched and it should make for a
fascinating clash in the quarter-finals of the Copa America. Peru and
Paraguay each won two of their four games during the group stage,
although the former come into this on the back of a three-match unbeaten
run. Both teams have shown they know where the back of the net is
having scored five goals apiece during the group stage but the pair are
likely to be focused on their defensive efforts in this clash and that
should result in a tense affair that produces no more than two goals.
