THE TEAM NEWS
ECUADOR
- Ecuador earned their first point of this year’s Copa America as they played out a 2-2 draw with Venezuela on the back of their narrow loss to Columbia but it was a disappointing result in the circumstances.
- Having twice taken the lead through Eduar Preciado and Gonzalo Plata, the latter’s effort coming with just 19 minutes left on the clock, Ecuador failed to hang on as they conceded an injury time equaliser.
- Having made several changes to his side following the opening defeat to the Columbians, another failure to collect three points could result in further alterations to the team here and Plata’s goal may be enough to earn a starting spot.
PERU
- After a 4-0 hammering at the hands of Brazil to open their Copa America campaign, Peru produced a strong response as they got the better of Columbia last time out and they will look to build on that effort here.
- Sergio Pena handed the Peruvians the advantaged in the opening 20 minutes and while they were pegged back early in the second half having conceded a penalty, Columbia’s Yerry Mina turned into his own net to hand the lead back to Peru who were able to see the game out.
- Ricardo Gareca appeared to be very impressed with his side’s performance, so much so that his first substitution of the game did not come until the 83rd minute so is unlikely to tamper with his starting XI unless there are any injuries to overcome.
THE PREDICTION
Ecuador sit bottom of Group B with just a solitary point after two
matches and while qualification to the quarter-finals is still in their
own hands, they know that a loss here to Peru will make things difficult
for them. In what was a disappointing draw to Venezuela, Ecuador blew a
late lead and that could affect them going into this clash. The
Peruvians saw off Columbia with a good display in their latest game and
they will be on a real high after that success which can see them claim
at least a point from this contest.
