THE TEAM NEWS
BRAZIL
- Tite is in charge of the hosts and the best team in the tournament. A solid spine that has evolved from concerning immaturity to experienced nous in seven years provides a platform for several players in attacking positions able to express themselves. However, only to an extent. Defensive duties remain imperative even for the stars of Neymar.
- Astonishingly, they were knocked out of the group stages of the 2016 Copa America in the United States. However, in the last nine tournaments, Brazil have won five including the most recent version in 2019 as hosts.
- Alisson, Thiago Silva, Marquinhos, Casemiro. That’s the foundation for which Neymar, Roberto Firmino and Richarlison get to express themselves and feel confident Brazil will not concede more than one goal maximum. They have won their last four matches, all wins have come to nil.
VENEZUELA
- This is a better Venezuelan generation than previous sides. - Venezuela have made it out of the group stage in four of the last five tournaments since 2007. Prior to that, they had never made it through the first round/group stage in the previous 12 tournaments.
- Portuguese manager Jose Peseiro has a terrible record as Venezuela coach with just one win and a draw in his six matches so far. This is his 19th managerial role in a 29 year career and that journeyman, experienced side of him isn’t being shown in the results.
THE PREDICTION
It would be relatively easy to suggest that the Brazilians will comfortably win this match but, as said, there tends to be a lack of consistent potency. Those aforementioned four wins to nil in their last four matches have been low-scoring encounters with three successive 2-0 wins and a 1-0 win over Venezuela last November. They are the home team and by far the better side so a Brazil win is expected but it could be a low-scoring fixture.
