THE TEAM NEWS

BRAZIL

  • A 24-man squad named by Tite for a tournament that could easily be heavily affected by COVID is something of a concern but the Brazilians started well with a 3-0 victory over Venezuela. However, it was a heavily affected Venezuelan side with several missing players due to COVID highlighting the aforementioned potential issues of a smaller squad.
  • The strength and experience of this squad means it is likely that selection will remain consistent throughout the competition. That 3-0 opening match victory was a structured and composed 4-3-3.
  • Gabriel Jesus facilitated the attack for Neymar and Richarlison to flourish however he was substituted for Gabriel Barbosa in the second-half who did score in the match so that could be a potential change in the match.

PERU

  • Ricardo Gareca has had a difficult and COVID-prepared for build-up whereby they have selected 60 players to be narrowed down to 26.
  • Peru qualified for the 2018 World Cup playing a slick style of play and reached the 2019 Copa America final built around the goal scoring ability of Paolo Guerrero. 1995 was the last time that Peru didn’t make it past the first round of the tournament.
  • There is no Paolo Guerrero this time around but the naturalized former Italian youth international Gianluca Lapadula will start up-front with the continued effervescent and attacking presence of Christian Cueva in behind being the key man in this side.

THE PREDICTION

Brazil will come into this as the comfortable favourites but Peru are also likely to score a goal in this match as the Brazilians are quite functional and ever so slightly static which could allow space for the likes of Cueva to play in with Andre Carrillo potentially able to threaten in behind. Brazil should still edge the game out but it could see both teams to scoring.
