THE LOWDOWN

Westerlo

Following promotion last season, Westerlo have enjoyed an impressive 2022/23 Jupiler Pro League campaign as they finished inside the top eight and the European playoff spots, ahead of the ‘split’.

Their most recent outing was a much-needed 3-0 hammering of Standard Liege, last weekend. An early strike from left-back Maxim De Cuyper, followed by a brace from Nene Dorgeles sealed that victory for the home team.

They sit at the bottom of the UEFA Europa Conference League playoff group, though, after beginning the ‘split’ with two defeats and a draw before that victory.

Gent

Under the management of Hein Vanhaezebrouck, Gent begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting comfortably at the top of the UEFA Europa Conference League playoff group and they have already assured their qualification for the competition that they reached the quarter-finals of this season.

Gent were forced to fight back twice at the Ghelamco Arena last weekend. Cercle Brugge took an 18th minute lead before Gift Orban levelled shortly in the second-half. Cercle took the lead, once again, from the penalty spot, before a late Hugo Cuypers equaliser.

That Cuypers equaliser means they have collected ten points from their four matches since the ‘split’ and have suffered just one defeat in their last 11 Jupiler Pro League outings.

THE PREDICTION

Jonas De Roeck's Westerlo have been one of the most impressive and entertaining sides since their return to the Belgian top-flight. In their 38 games so far this season, there has been a remarkable 133 goals. They now face a Gent side that have score 75 goals so far, as well as letting in 42. With two games to go and Gent's future secured, both sides may be keen on taking their foot off the gas in terms of intensity so another high-scoring thriller could well be in store as lapses in concentration beckon.

TIP: OVER 2.5 GOALS
