THE LOWDOWN

TUNISIA

  • Tunisia suffered a shock loss against Australia to leave their hopes of advancing to the Round of 16 hanging by a thread with them now needing to defeat world champions France to have any chance of remaining in the tournament.
  • The Tunisians have failed to find the back of the net in either of their two games to date so they may opt to change things up with the country’s second-highest scorer of all-time, Wahbi Zhazri, set to come into contention for a starting spot.

FRANCE

  • France booked their spot in the Round of 16 thanks to a hard-fought win over Denmark in their second group game and the world champions will now go in search of the point they need to secure first place in Group D.
  • Didier Deschamps has the luxury of rotating his side for this contest and he may well take the opportunity to do just that with Eduardo Camavinga potentially coming in to play in an unfamiliar left-back role in order to rest the only recognised left-back remaining in the squad, Theo Hernandez.

  • Tunisia are without a win in their previous 11 World Cup matches against European nations (D4 L7)
  • Tunisia come into this match having not scored in two successive World Cup matches for the first time since 1998
  • France have won their last six World Cup matches equalling their best-ever winning streak at the finals
  • France are unbeaten in their last nine World Cup matches (W8 D1), their longest unbeaten run at the finals.
  • France have won three and lost two of their previous five World Cup matches against African nations
  • France have started a World Cup final competition with two successive wins for the third edition in a row and the fourth time overall. The only time they have won all three matches in a World Cup group is 1998
  • Hugo Lloris is now level with Lilian Thuram on 16 World Cup appearances for France. Only Thierry Henry and Fabien Barthez (both 17) have played more games for France at the finals
  • Kylian Mbappé is second top goalscorer for France in World Cup history with seven goals. He trails Just Fontaine by six goals
  • Kylian Mbappé has scored in each of France’s last three World Cup matches

THE PREDICTION

Tunisia come into their final group game with a daunting task ahead of them if they are to remain in the 2022 FIFA World Cup. They have yet to find the back of the net in their two games to date but must do so and subsequently defeat the reigning world champions to have any chance of extending their stay in Qatar. France have shown some good signs so far and have booked their spot in the next round having won both games. They could be set to heavily rotate their side for this encounter to keep some of their stars fresh for the knockout stages but they still have the strength in depth to prevail in this encounter.

TIP: FRANCE TO WIN
