  • Ghana overcame South Korea in a five-goal thriller to keep their hopes of advancing to the next round of the 2022 FIFA World Cup alive but they need another positive result here to have any chance of finishing in the top two.
  • The Ghanaians have now scored five goals in their two games to date but have also conceded the same number so it could well be they look to rely on their attack in this contest with an unchanged side potentially set to be named.

  • Uruguay were beaten by Portugal to leave their future participation in the tournament hanging by a thread and if they are to advance to the knockout stages, they will have to improve in front of goal.
  • They are yet to find the back of the net in their two games to date so changes could be made up front with Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani struggling to impress so Darwin Nunez may be joined in attack by Maxi Gomez.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Ati-Zigi; Lamptey, Salisu, Mensa; Partey, Samed; Kudus, A. Ayew, J. Ayew; Williams

PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Rochet; Gimenez, Godin, Coates; Varela, Valverde, Bentancur, Vecino, Olivera; Nunez, Gomez

QUESTIONABLE: Ronald Araujo (Fitness)

  • Ghana have qualified for the knockout phase in two of their previous three World Cup appearances
  • Ghana have played against South American opposition twice previously in the FIFA World Cup. They lost 3-0 in the round of 16 against Brazil in 2006 and then in the quarter-finals in 2010 they were edged out on penalties by Uruguay following a 1-1 draw
  • Ghana are aiming to win two successive World Cup matches for the first time since 2006
  • Ghana have not failed to score in their last seven World Cup matches
  • Ghana have not kept a clean sheet in their last nine World Cup matches
  • André Ayew is set to make his 10th World Cup appearance, only Asamoah Gyan (11) has featured in more games for Ghana at the finals
  • Uruguay are unbeaten in their previous four World Cup matches against African nations (W2 D2)
  • Uruguay have won their last two World Cup group stage matches against African nations without conceding a goal
  • Uruguay have failed to score in three successive World Cup matches for only the second time. The previous occasion was in three games across the 1986 and 1990 final competitions
  • Uruguay have not failed to qualify from their group in a World Cup final competition since 2002
  • Against Portugal, Diego Godin and Edinson Cavani joined Fernando Muslera as all-time leading appearance-makers in FIFA World Cup matches on 16 appearances

Ghana have been entertaining to watch in this FIFA World Cup but they will hope that is not all they are remembered for. They know a win in this game with Uruguay would ensure that they advance to the next round while a point may well be enough too. They take on a Uruguay side that have been poor going forward and are yet to find the back of the net. That is in stark contrast to the Ghanaians who have bagged five times and their enterprise in the final third should be enough to claim a positive result from this matchup.
