THE TEAM NEWS

PALMEIRAS

  • Palmeiras will be close to full strength here. Their lone absentee due to injury will be veteran midfielder Ramires.
  • Miguel Angel Borja will lead Palmeiras’ attacking line but talented playmaker Gustavo Scarpa deserves a mention as well. The 25-year-old attacking midfielder has four goals and one assist in five 2019 Copa Libertadores appearances thus far.
  • O Verdao (PAL) are struggling in recent weeks since they have not won in their previous five matches in all competitions (D3, L2). However, they were W4, L1 in their prior five games so their 10-game record reads: W4, D3, L3. However, Palmeiras are undefeated in their last 10 games at Allianz Parque (W9, D1).

GODOY CRUZ

  • Godoy Cruz will be without Fabian Henriquez due to a suspension while Gabriel Alanis has been ruled out due to injury. Juan Francisco Brunetta and Nahuel Arena will be game-time calls after receiving rest in the previous match.
  • Uruguayan striker Santiago Garcia has three goals in the 2019 Copa Libertadores and will lead Godoy Cruz in the final third after scoring both goals during the first leg against Palmeiras last week.
  • Godoy Cruz are coming off a 3-2 loss against San Lorenzo in the Superliga opener last week, and they have won just two of their last five games in all competitions (W2, D1, L2). They have also gone W4, D2, L4 in their last 10 outings. To make things even more complicated, ‘El Tomba’ (GC) are W1, D1, L3 in their last five away matches.

THE PREDICTION

Palmeiras have been extremely dominant at home in recent months but their current form does not inspire a lot of confidence, although, neither does Godoy Cruz’s away woes. However, the Brazilian side have the edge after scoring twice in the first leg and they have kept a clean sheet in nine of their last 10 home matches. The margin might be slim, but Palmeiras have everything in their favour to secure a spot in the quarterfinals.
