Flavio Cobolli last competed at the Paris Masters. He won his first match in dominant fashion against Tomas Machac but then lost to Ben Shelton in straight sets. He lost a tight first set on a tiebreak to the American and that proved to be the difference. Cobolli has faded in recent weeks but his overall level has still been very competitive.

He faces fellow countryman Lorenzo Sonego in the round-of-16 after receiving a bye. Sonego was pushed in his first-round match but still came back to win against Jan Choinski. He made a strong start, moving into a 3-1 lead, but his level dropped as he was broken twice in quick succession to lose the first set. He did not drop serve after that, winning 4-6 6-4 6-4.

This could be a close match between the two Italians, who are evenly matched indoors, but Cobolli’s performances have still been encouraging, and he is likely to be the slight favourite.
