Flavio Cobolli progressed to the third-round of the French Open after a largely comfortable win over Yibing Wu. After claiming the first set, the Italian fell 2-0 behind in the second but quickly turned the momentum around, winning four games in succession to establish a commanding lead. He then went a double break up in the third and despite a lack Wu fightback, Cobolli served it out to win 6-4 6-4 6-4. That is his second win over the Chinese player this year, as he beat him on his way to the Mexican Open in February.
He now takes on Learner Tien. The young American extended his winning run to six matches as he beat Facundo Diaz Acosta in a dramatic five set match. Tien was two sets to one down and was on the verge of a defeat as his opponent went 4-1 up in the fourth set. The 20-year-old saved two match points and staged a brilliant recovery to win 7-5 4-6 3-6 7-6 (4) 6-3.
This will be the second meeting between the two players, with Tien having beaten Cobolli in Beijing last year. Cobolli will be fresher and could have the advantage on clay, but Tien’s resilience and recent form indicate that a closely fought match should be expected.
