Flavio Cobolli’s first tournament since his run to the quarter-finals of Wimbledon saw him reach the third-round in Washington. He comfortably defeated Yoshihito Nishioka in straight sets but came unstuck against Frances Tiafoe, losing 6-1 6-4. Though the Italian has enjoyed a breakthrough season, with his first two titles and his run to the last eight at SW19, his record on hard courts in 2025 leaves a lot to be desired. He has just one ATP Tour victory on the surface, and it came last week against Nishioka.
He faces Alexis Galarneau to begin his campaign in Toronto. The Canadian picked up his first tour-level win on the ATP with a straight sets win over Arthur Rinderknech. He went a break up in set one but was pegged back by the Frenchman, ultimately taking it on a tiebreak. He raced ahead in the second to win 7-6 6-2.
Cobolli’s poor run on hard courts should offer some encouragement to Galarneau, but the Italian should still be finding a way to win against the world number 193.
