Felix Auger-Aliassime avoided an upset in his first-round match as he staged a recovery to beat Daniel Altmaier in five sets. The Canadian looked to be heading out as he went 4-1 down in the deciding set, but he broke back as the match went to a tiebreak. The two players could not be separated at 5-5, but Auger-Aliassime won five of the final seven points to win 4-6 6-4 4-6 6-1 7-6 (7) after four hours and 16 minutes.
He now takes on Roman Andres Burruchaga. The Argentine won his first ever main draw match at a Grand Slam as his compatriot Sebastian Baez was forced to retire in the fourth set. Burruchaga went behind but recovered to lead 2-6 7-5 6-2 2-0, before Baez decided that he could not continue.
Burruchaga will need to reduce his error count if he is to challenge here, having committed 52 unforced errors in his opening round win. Even so, the Argentine remains a dangerous opponent on clay and could test Auger-Aliassime, who was far from convincing in his win over Altmaier.
