Federico Cina notched up his first win at a Grand Slam as he defeated Reilly Opelka in five sets. Cina was two points away from victory in the fourth set tiebreak, but Opelka would force a decider. Nevertheless, the teenager came through to win 3-6 6-4 6-2 6-7 (6) 6-4 after three hours and 21 minutes. Cina saved an impressive 10 out of 11 break points.

His second-round opponent is Jesper de Jong. The Dutchman brought Stan Wawrinka’s Roland Garros’ journey to an end in round one. De Jong dropped the second set, but he raised his game after that to defeat the veteran 6-3 3-6 6-3 6-4 after three hours and four minutes.

Cina is comfortable at constructing points on the surface and he showed strong battling qualities in his first-round match. He should be able to dictate with his forehand and hit through the court, which could trouble De Jong.
