Fabian Marozsan impressed in the round-of-16 as he beat fifth seed Brandon Nakashima to make it through to the next stage of the Almaty Open. The Hungarian did not give up a break point and dominated the second set to win 7-5 6-1.
He will now face former world number one Daniil Medvedev. Medvedev was not at his best but still battled his way past Adam Walton in straight sets. Walton had won their match in Cincinnati two months ago and was very competitive in this one, despite the 2021 US Open champion taking the first set 7-5. Walton raced clear in the second as he went 4-1 up, but Medvedev showed all his experience to draw level and then dominate the tiebreak, not even conceding a point, as he clinched the win.
Marozsan will take confidence from his previous performance, but Medvedev has found some form with the season reaching its conclusion and is just one match away from a third semi-final in a row. They played each other for the first time at the US Open in 2024, with Medvedev winning in straight sets. The Russian is still good value to get the job done comfortably here.
