Eva Lys picked up a fine win in round one as she defeated third seed Maya Joint in straight sets. It was not all plain sailing for the German as she was broken on three occasions and went 4-1 down in the second, but she did take all five of her break point opportunities as she won 6-4 6-4. This victory will have been a boost for Lys after failing to convert two match points against Madison Keys in her previous match at the Cincinnati Open.
Her next opponent is Polina Kudermetova. The Russian finally picked up her first win in over four months as she beat world number 557 Katrina Scott 6-4 6-4. Despite the victory, it was still a nervy display, with Kudermetova being broken twice when trying to close out the match at 5-1 in the second set.
Lys will be a far tougher opponent for Kudermetova and we can’t see her raising her game to a level strong enough to worry the German. Lys has been very solid recently and she will be a comfortable favourite.
