Eva Lys produced a fine display to defeat world number 10 Elena Rybakina in the third-round. Rybakina looked set to clinch a win in three sets as she broke to go 4-3 up, but Lys reeled off three straight games to earn a memorable victory. She won 6-3 1-6 6-4 overall after two hours and 14 minutes.
McCartney Kessler also advanced after her opponent Barbora Krejcikova was forced to retire in the third set. The former world number two was 6-1 4-2 up at one stage, but Kessler broke twice to win the second set. Krejcikova decided to retire having gone 3-0 down in the decider.
Lys leads the head-to-head 1-0 after a victory at the Japan Open last year over three sets. She may be the slight underdog and the lower ranked player, but the German will take a lot of confidence from her victory over Rybakina and that momentum may just swing things in her favour here.
