Eva Lys reached the quarter-finals of a WTA 1000 event for the first time as she came from a set down to beat McCartney Kessler in the round-of-16. The German had opportunities to break Kessler back when she was serving for the first set but was unable to do so as she went behind. Nevertheless, Lys mostly controlled the next two sets to win 4-6 6-1 6-2.
Coco Gauff will be her next opponent. Gauff came back from a precarious position to get past Belinda Bencic. She made a strong start as she opened up a 4-1 lead, only for Bencic to reel off five games in a row to take the first set. The defending champion looked to be on the brink when Bencic broke to make it 4-3 in the second, but she broke straight back and took the second set on a tiebreak. The two-time Grand Slam singles champion dominated the decider to win a tense match 4-6 7-6 6-2.
Lys has performed brilliantly to make it this far, but her tournament is likely to reach its conclusion at the hands of the world number three.
