Ethan Quinn began his summer hard court swing in Washington. He comfortably beat Christopher O’Connell 6-3 6-2 in his first-round match but came unstuck against compatriot Brandon Nakashima in the next stage, losing in straight sets. Quinn has enjoyed a breakthrough season, having broken into the top 100 and won his first match at a slam, even reaching the third-round at Roland Garros during the end of May.
He will take on Yoshihito Nishioka in the first-round of the Canadian Open. Nishioka has struggled for form and fitness throughout the campaign. He ended a long nine match run without a win in the first-round of Washington, defeating Jenson Brooksby in three sets. However, that upturn was short-lived as he succumbed to Flavio Cobolli in the next round.
There are just three places between these two in the world rankings, with Quinn at 86 and Nishioka at 89. This could prove to be a close contest, but Quinn has far more wins under his belt this season while there are always question marks over Nishioka when it comes to his fitness. The American should be viewed as the favourite to win.
