Emma Raducanu will be desperate to make a deep run at Wimbledon but in this first round at least, she may not have the whole crowd completely behind her as she goes up against a fellow Brit in Mimi Xu. The teenager from Swansea with Chinese parents has a playstyle very well suited to grass and won’t prove a pushover here after some positive results leading into the tournament.
Not only did Xu make it to the quarter-finals of the Birmingham Classic, she also overcame USA’s Katie Volynets in Nottingham to make it into the second round of a WTA 250 Tour event, again demonstrating her obvious talent. If she can start well against Raducanu and take the first set deep, Raducanu could start to struggle physically when taking into account her recent back spasm.
But Raducanu’s power, whether it be base-hitting or her service game is a seriously strong weapon on the grass courts of Wimbledon and has the ability to carry her through matches such as this. She’ll be expected to overwhelm Xu and ultimately triumph in straight sets.
