Emma Raducanu looked every inch the former US Open champion in the opening round, dominating Ena Shibahara in a 6-1, 6-2 victory. Her first serve was accurate and conversation rate high, winning 82% of points on that first serve, whilst four successful converted break points from seven suggests a high level of clutch from Raducanu.
The British number one’s powerful strokeplay serves her well on the hard courts at this tournament and Janice Tjen faces a big challenge to keep them at bay. But after upsetting 24th seed Veronika Kudermetova in round one, the Indonesian’s confidence and belief will be high. The question though, is how much does she have left in the tank after a draining three-set match that lasted 30 total games.
