Emma Navarro had to battle from a set down in the second-round, eventually overcoming fellow American Caty McNally. Navarro struggled for consistency early but became much steadier from the second set onwards and increasingly gained the upper hand in the longer rallies. She won 3-6 6-2 6-3. Navarro had already been pushed hard in round one, beating Lois Boisson 7-6 6-7 6-3 in a match that was also interrupted by rain.

Karolina Muchova enjoyed a dominant win in the previous round, as she dismantled Katie Boulter 6-1 6-0. The seventh seed converted all seven break points she created and dropped only 13 points on serve, completing a hugely impressive performance against the British number one. Muchova had opened her campaign with another comfortable victory, beating Sinja Kraus 6-3 6-0.

Navarro’s consistency and ability to extend rallies can make her difficult to put away, but Muchova has far more variety, and her willingness to move forward could cause problems for the American.
