Emma Navarro recorded her best win of the season in the previous round as she outlasted top seed and six-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek to advance to the quarter-finals of the China Open. The American profited from a poor Swiatek display, as she made 80 unforced errors, but it was still a top performance from Navarro, who came through to win 6-4 4-6 6-0.
She will face compatriot Jessica Pegula in the next round after she came through a three set match with Marta Kostyuk. Pegula’s solid game was too much for the Ukrainian, as she dominated the decider to win 6-3 6-7 6-1. The 2024 US Open finalist was on the brink of a third-round exit to Emma Raducanu, but she saved match points on that occasion and has now come through another tough assignment against Kostyuk.
Pegula leads the head-to-head 2-0 and 1-0 on hard court. She beat Navarro in the quarter-finals of the Miami Open last year and in the quarter-finals of the Bad Homburg Open this season on her way to winning the title. There will be plenty of baseline exchanges between the pair, but Pegula has enough consistency and quality to edge past.
