Emilio Nava had an encouraging North American hard court swing in the lead up to the US Open. He reached the quarter-finals of the Los Cabos Open and was also able to qualify for Toronto and Cincinnati. He reached the third-round in Canada and even took the first set against Karen Khachanov, with the Russian going on to make the final. Nava also picked up another main draw win in Cincinnati before a loss in round two.
Taylor Fritz begins his campaign at his home slam, having made the final last year. He has performed to a decent standard on hard courts since his semi-final appearance at Wimbledon, making the last four in Toronto but losing in straight sets. He also got through to the quarter-finals in Washington and the round-of-16 in Cincinnati.
Fritz leads the head-to-head 2-0. He faced Nava just a few weeks ago in the second-round of the Cincinnati Open, with the world number four winning 6-4 6-4. Another straight sets win is highly probable, but Nava has shown enough this summer to suggest that he could be a threat over five sets.
