Emerson Jones qualified for the main draw of a WTA 1000 event for the second time after coming from a set down to beat Varvara Lepchenko. The 18-year-old won her opening round match at the Miami Open against Linda Fruhvirtova earlier in the year. Her best result since that tournament was a run to the final in Gifu on the ITF circuit, but she has also suffered a few early exits.
Her first-round opponent is Lanlana Tararudee. She is up to her highest ranking of 78 in the world after a strong run of form. The 22-year-old won a title in Istanbul last month, and then backed that up on the main tour with a run to the quarter-finals of the Prague Open. This included a fabulous win over Nikola Bartunkova, which saw Tararudee come from 5-1 down in the deciding set to win, saving four match points in the process.
Jones is a talent, but Tararudee is further ahead in her development and has the body of work to show for it over the last month.
