Elvina Kalieva returns to action after an encouraging run through qualifying at the US Open. The 23-year-old beat Kristina Mladenovic, Sofia Costoulas and Vendula Valdmannova, requiring three sets in each match to meet the main draw. Kalieva then gave Lanlana Tararudee a competitive test in the first-round, eventually losing 6-3 6-7 (4) 6-2. She has a 21-10 record on hard courts during 2026.

Kayla Day suffered a much earlier exit in New York, losing 6-3 6-1 to Julieta Pareja in the opening round of qualifying. Her previous results were more positive as she came through the qualifiers in Cincinnati and Canada. At the latter event, she got past Diane Parry before a straight sets loss to world number four Coco Gauff.

Kalieva leads the head-to-head 1-0 after a win at an ITF event in 2022. She has produced the stronger results on this surface recently, and showed plenty of resilience during her US Open qualifying run.
