22-year-old Elsa Jacquemot claimed her first ever US Open victory in the first round, defeating two-time WTA Tour title winner Marie Bouzkova 6-4, 6-3 in a match that was decided by fine margins.
The Frenchwoman has been playing with confidence lately, having reached the quarter-finals of Tennis in the Land just last week, and will now bid to reach the third round of a Grand Slam event for the second time after achieving that feat at this year’s French Open.
2021 finalist Leylah Fernandez will have other ideas though, after the Canadian defeated compatriot Rebecca Marino 6-2, 6-1 in the first round.
Fernandez, who won the Washington Open last month but failed to make much of an impact in her other three hard-court tournament leading into the US Open, is looking to go beyond the second round at Flushing Meadows for the first time since losing to Emma Raducanu in the final four years ago.
Often an inconsistent player, Fernandez is a difficult player to predict at the best of times, and although she is considered the favourite in this match, an upset would not be a total surprise here. Should Fernandez play her A-game, she should be winning this, but we’d recommend staying away from this one in the betting markets.
