Qualifier Ella Seidel recorded the first top-20 win of her career in the second round, winning five games in a row in the deciding set to defeat eighth seed Emma Navarro 6-4, 1-6, 6-4.
It was a landmark win for the 20-year-old German, who had previously defeated Polina Kudermetova in the first round of what is her first appearance at a WTA 1000 event.
Next up for Seidel is a third-round clash with 29th seed McCartney Kessler, with the American defeating compatriot Caty McNally 6-4, 6-3 in the second round.
After winning the Doubles event at the recent Canadian Open alongside Coco Gauff, Kessler has chosen to focus specifically on Singles in Cincinnati so she should have plenty in the tank at this early stage of the event.
It will be a tough job for Seidel to back up her win over Navarro, but given how well she played in that match, it would not be a surprise if she were to take a set here.
